304 vs 316L Stainless Steel: Which Grade Do You Need?
Use 304 for indoor, low-chloride, food-safe and decorative parts. Use 316L when chlorides are present, when service is continuously above about 60 °C in a chloride-bearing medium, or for welded marine and chemical equipment. 316L typically costs 30–40% more than 304.
| Property | 304 | 316L |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel | 8–10.5% | 10–14% |
| Molybdenum | — | 2–3% |
| Chloride resistance | Moderate | Good |
| Typical use | Kitchen equipment, sinks, elevator panels, general sheet metal | Chemical, marine, pharmaceutical, coastal, food with salt |
| Relative price | 100 | 130–140 |
| Welding | Easy | Easy; Mo improves pitting resistance in weld zones |
When 304 is enough
dry indoor environments, decorative panels, food processing with low salt, structural parts not exposed to chlorides. Paying for 316L here is overspend.
When 316L is required
coastal air, salt water, de-icing salts, chemical media, continuous >60 °C in chloride service, welded assemblies difficult to re-passivate.
What to specify when ordering
grade, form, thickness × width, finish (2B/BA/No.4), quantity, EN 10204 3.1 MTC with heat number, delivery terms (FOB/CIF).
Common mistake
Choosing by price instead of the medium; 304 pitting in chloride service costs far more than the 316L premium.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is 316L worth the extra cost over 304?
- Only where chlorides, marine air, chemicals or higher temperatures are present. For dry indoor or food-grade low-chloride parts, 304 is normally sufficient and 316L adds 30–40% cost.
- Which grade should be used for coastal installations?
- 316L is the usual minimum for coastal or salt-exposed environments; for severe chloride service, 2205 duplex should be evaluated because of its higher PREN.
- What certificate should be requested with each batch?
- An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate with the heat number, covering chemical composition and mechanical properties; SGS or BV third-party inspection can be added on request.
